Breu explicació del projecte / Brief explanation of your project
This project explores the interplay between the scientific study and the commodification of the gifted child in Spain and France in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It examines the public demonstrations of so-called child prodigies in different fields, including music, chess and mathematics.

The contextual backgrounds are scientific and cultural settings, such as academies of science, psychology laboratories and theatres, where these children were culturally admired and scientifically examined. To this end, the project combines methodological approaches from the history of the human sciences, cultural history, and childhood studies.

Addressing gifted children as both a scientific and a cultural matter this research will open up new perspectives on the role that science –particularly psychology– plays in the entertainment industry. Focusing on the concept of talent, the project aims to broaden the historical scope beyond the study of intellectual giftedness.

In addition, this research will provide a much-needed background to the permanence of an entertainment culture around gifted children. In this way, the project will generate social awareness concerning the cultural practices around these children, and will show the different strategies the media and scientists used to promote them.
