Breu explicació del projecte / Brief explanation of your project
Climate change threatens to degrade many ecosystems and negative impact human lives across the world. In order to better direct conservation efforts, many strategies have been put forward to enhance our understanding of ecosystem assembly and resilience. Aided by graph theory, these approaches paint a mathematical picture of species interactions that can establish causal relations between community structure and ecological robustness. However, new advances in complex systems allow us to go further and create a more complete view of ecosystems through hypergraphs. Instead of simply using pairwise species interactions like predation, mutualism or parasitism, we seek to characterize global ecosystems with interaction triads: species-biome-species. This framework is backed up by the existence of key modulating factors in the physical makeup and biological features in biomes themselves, for instance a given pathogenic relation might exist in a given context where there is a 3rd species acting as a vector or within a given temperature range but not everywhere else. With this framework we hope to provide a more complete view of how ecosystems fall apart, discover new early warning signals of systemic decay and supply conservation efforts with better tools to prevent damage caused by climate change.
