Breu explicació del projecte / Brief explanation of your project
Mobility (i.e., the ability to move) is a key contributor to physical, mental and social well-being. However, it diminishes over time and in the presence of chronic conditions. In chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), we have some evidence of mobility impairments, but further research is needed to better understand how this relates to the disease. Mobility is usually assessed in controlled settings such as gait labs and clinical practice, where it provides a useful but blurry image of how individuals actually move in their daily lives. To understand what happens in real-world scenarios, we could use wearable sensors that offer us the possibility of tracking daily uncontrolled mobility performance, and to identify impairments affecting individual’s health. Furthermore, to truly understand real-world scenarios, we can also use digital technologies that allow us to assess the outdoor environment in which mobility takes place, and further investigate how it interacts with the disease.
Within the IMI-funded Mobilise-D project, we want: (1) To characterize mobility in patients with COPD. (2) To investigate the associations between ambient air pollution and COPD.
To do so, we will use wearable digital technologies that allow us to track real-world conditions, as well as validated clinical assessments that will provide us information on patients’ health. Wearable technologies can provide us a more accurate picture of mobility in daily life and can help us detect changes associated with the disease. Moreover, mobility performance in real-world scenarios depends greatly on the context in which it takes place; and this can only be captured following individuals in their own living environments.
