Breu explicació del projecte / Brief explanation of your project
SPORE-MED aims to upgrade current urban wastewater treatment plants, making them more efficient and sustainable.
These facilities are essential for returning used water to the environment in optimal condition. They also serve as a source of valuable resources—such as reclaimed water and nutrients—and play a crucial role in wastewater-based surveillance. However, they remain major energy consumers and often fail to remove certain pollutants.
SPORE-MED seeks to address these challenges, focusing on the water–energy–food–health nexus in the Mediterranean region, which is more vulnerable to climate change and water scarcity than the global average. The project will develop and validate innovative water treatment and resource recovery technologies, online monitoring tools, sustainable agricultural practices for water and nutrient reuse, and protocols and plans for wastewater surveillance and reuse. These solutions will be tested in four demos sites across Mediterranean countries.
