The N-SPIRE project will use the Neanderthals, an extinct human species, as a case study to determine how modern humans may physically adapt to a changing climate. The shape and function of the Neanderthal nose will be reconstructed, relying on the only preserved nasal cavity of the human fossil record, that of the so-called “Altamura Man” from Southern Italy. N-SPIRE will investigate the possible functional adaptations related to air moisture, pressure and temperature, and compare the results to modern humans to identify possible convergent adaptations.
