During the quaternary period, climatic changes have influenced the patterns of humans settlement. Following the last interglacial, a climatic deterioration took place. This had a significant impact on the Neanderthal populations in Europe, both on their environment and the distribution of their resources. Then we can ask ourselves what adaptations were necessary during climatic variations? Did they have different subsistence strategies? why did they abandon certain sites? Was the climatic factor preponderant in the variations of the Neanderthal settlement?
Small vertebrates have many advantages in addressing these question:
-They represent a high biodiversity with many adaptations to the environment.
– The species have specific ecological requirements and a limited territory.
To answer these questions, we use a multi-taxon approach by studying small mammals, lagomorphs and birds. Taking into account a greater biodiversity allows us to obtain complementary information to restore accurately the environmental parameters and the paleo-landscapes. We are also looking for the representativeness of our small vertebrate assemblage, does it give a good picture of the paleodiversity and we investigate whether there has been any exploitation of small game and whether this exploitation corresponds to a response to environmental change.
