Breu explicació del projecte / Brief explanation of your project
The overall aim of the HeBe project is to identify circulating blood factors (i.e. proteins and metabolites) with a rejuvenating or an ageing effect on the human brain that can therefore become therapeutic targets for Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). Following the failure of many clinical trials of AD drug candidates, new therapeutic targets urgently need to be developed. The recent discovery of brain rejuvenating or ageing blood factors in animal models has created new opportunities to target age-related diseases like AD. However, there is currently no evidence that such factors have a similar effect on the human brain.
In HeBe, we will test the general hypothesis that humans also have rejuvenating or ageing circulating blood factors that affect brain health. We seek ultimately to answer the question whether modifying the levels of these blood factors in humans is a useful prevention and treatment strategy in the earliest asymptomatic stage of AD (preclinical AD).
